Chapter Seventeen

Today...

“Hang on, I'm coming!” Nick Tench called out, hauling himself off the bed in his dark motel room and stumbling toward the door as someone continued to pound on the other side. “Can you just stop knocking for a moment? I heard you already!”

Barely awake, he pulled the door open and saw two officers from the sheriff's department standing outside.

“What's wrong?” he asked cautiously. “My car's parked fine and -”

“Nicholas Tench?” one of the officers asked.

“Why do you want to know?”

“Mr. Tench, I need you to accompany us to the station,” the officer said firmly.

“Right now?”

“Right now.”

“It's pretty late,” Nick pointed out. “Can you tell me what this is all about? My father -”

“Mr. Tench, are you going to come with us,” the officer asked, interrupting him, “or do we have to do this the hard way?”

“I haven't done anything wrong,” Nick told him, looking him up and down for a moment before starting to swing the door shut. “Go to Hell,” he added, “you can come back tomorrow at a more civilized -”

Before he could finish, the first officer pushed the door open and grabbed Nick, slamming him against the wall while his colleague attached a pair of handcuffs.

“What the hell's wrong with you?” Nick gasped, clearly in pain as he tried in vain to pull away. “I haven't done anything! You can't just come storming in here like this and treat me like I'm some kind of common criminal!”

“Keep me informed,” John said, standing at his desk in the office. “I'll be out there just as soon as I can, but a few things have come up in town first. It's good that there's been no further sign of the wolves, though. Hopefully that means we'll get the power back on in the next few hours.”

“Sir?”

Hearing a knock at the door, he turned and saw Carolyn standing in the doorway.

“You wanted me to let you know when the suspect was ready,” she said cautiously. “He's about to be taken into room one, but the guys have a question. It's about the candles, they're really not sure about the safety aspect of questioning someone by candlelight if the generators fail. We've looked through all the manuals and there's nothing mentioned about what to do if we don't have power.”

“Leave that to me,” John said firmly. “I'm on my way.”

Once he'd cut the call, and with Carolyn having headed back along the corridor, John stood alone for a moment with a single electric light buzzing gently above him. Pretty much an entire twenty-four hours had now elapsed since the power had gone out, and any sense of novelty had long worn off; there had been a couple of teasing hints that things might pick up, brief moments when the power had returned but only for a second or two. Now that he faced a possible second night of trying to keep order in Sobolton during a blackout, John couldn't help but worry that even the station's generator might eventually fail, at which point chaos might break out entirely.
